Rory Silao
I was born in Manila, Philippines. I grew up in the inner city of Los Angeles, California. My mom worked as a Pharmacy Technician and my dad was a Longshoreman. Both are deceased. I miss them dearly. I am Asian with a Spanish background. I did my undergraduate studies at the University of the East, Manila. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1985. I attended Virgen Milagrosa in San Carlos. I graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1991. Currently, I am taking my Master's MS. Ed in Mental Health Counseling at Alfred University, class of 2021. The reason why I am studying counseling is that I want to give back to the community with the knowledge that I accumulated through my years in the medical field.
I have worked in the inner city of Los Angeles as an X-Ray Technician to the jungles of the Badjao Muslim tribe as a Medical Doctor in the Southern Philippines.
I care about working with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) folk because we are one community. They are my soul brothers and sisters. I treat us with the same respect I treat my white, Latino, Polynesian, and Black friends.
I have experienced racism throughout my life. The way I dealt with it is to just maintain my composure whenever it arises. Racism is a learned process through a person’s upbringing and it doesn’t matter what country you are in. I wish we all had counseling knowledge and could practice empathy in a non-judgmental atmosphere.
My clinical approach is more of a concrete method like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with an eclectic style of whatever works for the client, this includes Spirituality. I think my unique skill would be adequate in relating to all of my Black and Brown brothers and sisters.
We need Black and Brown male counselors because our youth need to be heard, connected with, mentored and to have role models. I enjoy sports like snowboarding and basketball. I have a bully Pitbull, he is adorable. Peace.
