Edward Fernandez, Therapist

Born in Queens, NY, my parents are from the Dominican Republic. My ethnic background is predominantly a combination of African and European decent. I attended Queens College, and graduated in 2015 and Brooklyn College, graduating in 2017. I am currently a graduate student with AUNY Alfred University, and my degree is expected this year, in December of 2022.

I have attended graduate school with CUNY Brooklyn College where I obtained my Master’s degree in Industrial Organization Psychology. I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling at Alfred University.

At the age of 7, I learned I was different than most kids. I suffered from the speech impediment, stutt-e-r-i-n-g, which made speaking very difficult and challenging. I was bullied and even failed grade school. However, unbeknownst to me at the time, I began learning about self-awareness and introspection. My father would often instruct me to think about what I wanted to say before verbalizing it. This phenomenon of thinking about your thoughts was life changing to me. I learned that thoughts, essentially determine the life you lived, and although I knew this to be true, I didn’t truly embody it. I went through life feeling miserable and lost until I learned to accept and love myself, and it is clear to me that my duty and ethical obligation is to help others prosper and live a meaningful life. So, I say, counseling chose me, not the other way around. Thank you for my speech impediment.

I did many different jobs before I came into counseling including being a Teachers Aid, a Case Manager and working in sales.

As a New Yorker, born and raised, diversity was my norm. The lack of equal treatment for people of color is inhumane and as the compassionate person I am, it is my duty to spread love and bring my fellow brothers up. Afterall, my skin color may not be Black, but I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for my African roots.

I experienced racism several times but there was one time that stands out from the others. I was 19 years old and a recent college graduate. I was walking home from a corner deli and upon crossing the street, a police officer in his vehicle instructs me to stop walking and get against the wall. Confused and frightened, I obeyed his orders and provided my ID. The police officer then looks at me and tells me “I don’t want to see you around here again spic”. I was dumbfounded and speechless. It is obvious that racism exist and evermore prevalent today in subliminal ways. Life doesn’t have to be this way, and I wish racism never existed. It is really disappointing to see that as advanced as we are as a society so many still choose hate over love.

My clinical approach is Psychodynamic. I consider and help you think about your life experiences, your childhood, your relationships and what’s happening in your life now and how all of that effects you. I also help you think about the changes you can make to grow and develop further, handle stress and manage your emotions.

Clients experience me very positively because they can sense that I am sincerely motivated to help.  Helping others has always come naturally to me. People have always expressed their gratitude and love for me, which many proclaimed was due to my sincere desire to help. As a school counselor, students of color would eagerly come to my office to speak their problems, and at my current Psychotherapy position, clients are constantly experiencing breakthroughs.

I know my purpose in life is to help others evolve into the person they know they can become. I believe we’re all unique and have more to offer this world than we may know at the moment. My uniqueness is my ability to connect with others. My sincere belief that we’re all ONE experiencing life, this is what fuels me with vitality and a desire to leave the world a better place than when I entered it.
